So big, in fact, that you wonder why Lawrence Stroll was so desperate to sign him for Aston Martin in 2021. The performance gap to Charles Leclerc has been enormous. The errors have continued into this season although, given Ferrari’s plight at moving from front-runners to midfielders, they have been less high-profile. If 2019 was the year when we thought Sebastian Vettel could be done as force in F1, 2020 confirmed it beyond doubt. Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari (292) - Another troubled year, totally outclassed Qualifying record: 1-16 Total championship points: 0 (21st) Value added rating: -20 (16th) 18. Solid but needs to show improvement in 2021. Has beaten Russell, at least, on two occasions of the nine that they have both finished. His three 11th places to Russell’s one (at Williams) cannot be entirely ignored, however, and show that he is far from out of his depth in F1. His race performances have not been too bad, though. Certainly, it has hardly been an impressive first year for Latifi, particularly in qualifying, where Russell has beaten him comfortably every time. It is difficult to know whether this has been a poor debut season for the Canadian or whether George Russell has been getting the absolute maximum from the FW43.

There is a quick and talented driver in there somewhere, but it seems his promotion to Red Bull came far too early and has failed.

Instead of helping Red Bull in their fight with the Silver Arrows, he has been fighting - and regularly being beaten by - those in worse cars, with a few too many mistakes. He is making his way past those in slower cars as his team-mate ahead challenges the Mercedes cars. In his defence, many have said that once he gets qualifying sorted, he will be okay as his race performances have been punchy, making his way through the field. Perpetually half a second away from his team-mate in qualifying, his race performances have been little better. It is difficult not to feel some sympathy for him, but after 26 races at Red Bull he has failed to improve and, ultimately, to justify his place in the team. Even taking Verstappen’s brilliance into account, Albon has been nothing more than average at best. In comparison to team-mate Max Verstappen, Alexander Albon has fared appallingly. Alexander Albon, Red Bull (Rating: 225) – A mile away from Verstappen and a complete lack of progress We have also included a separate "value added" rating, which can be positive or negative and is a measure of how much a driver has out-performed his team-mate or car. We have tweaked this slightly from previous years but the basis is the same. We believe it rewards both standout performances and consistency throughout the field and does the best to take machinery out of the equation. From this they get their total end-of-season ranking points. Our subjective ratings are also factored in. This model takes into account their performances in qualifying and the race, their results relative to the strength of their machinery, how much they out-perform their team-mate by, as well as any penalty points they accrue over the season. As with the past two years, our rankings and ratings are calculated using a performance model that measures a variety of factors from a driver over a season.

In the end, though, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes did what they tend to do and won a seventh consecutive double title. Old favourites like Imola, the Nurburgring and Istanbul Park returned whilst Mugello and the Algarve made their debuts.
